I am currently pursuing a 2011 Ranger (not the one pictured). White, canopy FX4 trim level with 80,000km or 50,000 miles. If I can get it for a good price, my wife has greenlit the purchase....
Don’t hold your breath though, probably yet another fleeting dream at a fictional overland life I will never have.
That being said, if anyone knows anything about Rangers, let me know!

is this going to be another just jeepin’ situation where you may or may not eventually acquire a new or used vehicle in the next 0-48 months?

Hey now...I’m not shopping for new vehicles. Those cost real money.

Watch out for bad
timing chain guides on
the motor, but that’s
about it. My mom put 170k on her 04
Explorer with noisy guides and it wasn’t ever a problem.

As far as “stock” class desert racing goes the ranger and the Tacoma are the only midsize trucks that can hold up. The only real weak point on the ranger in that application is the tie rods. Convert those to heim joints and it's pretty bulletproof

I had a 2001 Ranger XLT 2WD with the 4.0L and LSD for 10 years, put 154k miles on it. Only thing I recall failing on it was the A/C compressor. Good truck.

I had them back in the window washing days. My team put hundreds of thousands of miles on them, and we didn’t have any major issues that made them inoperable until fixed.
A loooooo t o f minor things though. Seemed like some new little thing would break every other day...
With an automatic, they feel dangerously slow. I don’t want to say I’d avoid an auto at any price, but... I’m pretty close to that. They’re still slow with a manual, but you can rev it out to safely merge even with the 4 cylinder.
I personally love the rwd variety, but even with good tires I'd be worried about traction. I can't tell you how many times I had guys get stuck on flat ground when parked in a grassy parking area. With true knobbies and a canopy/tent/assorted overlanding farkles, it might not be an issue

Current owner of a 2001 xlt 4x4 4.0l with the less popular step side box. 203k miles. Keeps on chugging away! If it happens, enjoy it.

I’d say walk away unless it’s a manual. The 4R55E/5R55E automatic is made of peanut butter. We gave up on my wife’s beloved Explorer way too soon because it started slipping again after its second rebuild. Great truck, lousy transmission.
Other things I learned from the Explorer: you WILL need to replace the ball joints, you can do it yourself with the right tools, and get greaseable replacements. And when (not if) the fuel pump goes, don’t skimp: get the OEM replacement. The “Rock Auto Special” is not up to the task, and will cause it to start hard and run lean (and throw codes).
I’ve also heard horror stories about the 4.0 OHC engine, but mostly difficulty of repairs, not bad reliabilit
y.

Ranger Good or bad?

Good!
The
2011 year model has factory rear disc brakes. It will sit a little lower to the ground than the one pictured(2007) even with 4wd. As far as gas mileage, they get what they get.
20-25mpg. Either the manual or the Auto trans are fine in these. I always liked the crawl ratio in the manuals. Hwy use in the winter time reveal how steep the windshield i
s. Prepare for rock chips. They’re sweet little trucks that offer a lot of practicality. Lifting them can be a pain because of the torsion bar front suspension.
